Planning

Planning the project was a very tricky and time-consuming progress as I had to plan everything just right, so I could get the best result for my project.

My first challenge was deciding whether the Advert should be filmed in Live Action or whether it should be animated and after thinking about it for quite a while, I finally decided on animating it because I felt that the animation format fit my project better than if I made it in Live Action.

I chose to make my Advert in an animated format because there are things in the script that can’t really be done in Live Action, well they could but it would really look as good.

An example of this would be comparing the Live action Aladdin to the original cartoon version from the 1990s. Some elements may look the same and have a different story, but the visual style might look entirely different. I felt that animation was the way to go because it has more advantages to Live Action.

Advantages

Disadvantages

Live Action

·         Better chance of nailing action and drama

·         Better chance of convincing someone to buy the product

·         Recognisable actors

·         Location Filming especially during COVID is difficult to tackle

·         Location might not be available

·         Additional Costs (Equipment, Costumes etc)

Animation

·         No Location filming needed

·         Everything can be made in the software

·         No Production staff needed (i.e camera operators)

·         Can be very Time Consuming

·         Animation can be very expensive

·         May not come out as intended

I also had the difficult task of writing a script for the project but after writing the initial script, I managed to get what I needed and then after some rewrites and an attempt at writing and developing a completely new script, I had the final version.

I also had to map out what exactly I was going to do with the advert, however the animation side of things is also a factor because depending on the number of animated segments and how long each shot is along with how long it takes to animate, the average animation process can take up to a few days to maybe a couple of weeks at the latest.

Here's an example of an animated short film I made, and its length is what I expect my Short Film to be.

The short film took roughly a day to brainstorm, animate and edit together, it took roughly a few hours of on and off work to complete the animation for it. Location Selection was tricky as my advert is going to be animated instead of being filmed in Live Action, I decided to do this because I felt that the advert would provide more advantages and would make the advert look better.

Resources needed
  • Software (Stick Nodes and Green Screen)
  • Script (to place in animation using speech bubbles)
  • Editing (Adobe Premiere Pro)
Physical Resorces
iPad (In order to complete the Animation work)
Computer (To complete editing and any other little titbits that need ticking off)

I did also plan on using music in the project and luckily the principal editing software I used, that being iMovie had a music Library and best of all it was all royalty free.
